#OnReview – Zee5 ‘Karenjit Kaur’ Season 3 is a one time watch

The English proverb ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ goes right. Everyone has an inside story to tell. All it needs is a person who listens and believes. The never heard story of Sunny Leone is told by a Zee5 original series “Karenjit Kaur – The untold story of Sunny Leone”. From being an unknown Canadian adult movie star to shaking a leg with Bollywood superstars like Shah Rukh Khan, Sunny, indeed has come along a long journey.

Casting Bijay J. Anand (Sunny’s father), Marc Buckner (Daniel), Karamvir Lamba (Sunny’s brother), Grusha Kapoor (Sunny’s Mom) and Sunny Leone herself , it is a biopic that well portrays the journey of the pornstar turned actress who was born as Karenjit Kaur in a middle-class family. This is also a journey from a sweet innocent child to an adult film actress and then, a Bollywood fame. Post its good response to the initial two seasons, the third and final season of the series has 4 episodes and is premiered on Zee5 on 5th April 2019 in multiple languages including Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Hindi and English.

The season finale reveals her history, family, boyfriend turned husband Daniel and a few lesser known facts about her change from an adult actress to a popular Bollywood actress. Sunny tells, “Our future depends on our past”, something so perfect. It shows her relationship and marriage with Daniel, realizing that her father suffered from cancer, starting a production company with her husband and participating in Bigg Boss, the reason behind her launch in India. There are small things in the series which show how beautiful the actress is at heart. In an award show for Adult Movies, when a senior actress confesses that she would want to open a new chapter of her life and that means, she would never go back to the old one, it hits Sunny. That’s when she realizes a lot of things.

While the production value has remained largely similar to those that of the previous seasons, the series too has received a lukewarm response from the audience. The acting and the performances of the lead and supporting cast bind together the story which seems incoherent at times but manages to hold itself together as a whole. However, the series does score points on portraying the hardships and the unwarranted taboo that adult movie stars face in their real life and more so in a conservative society like ours.

How could one survive amidst a lot of troubles and mess-ups? This female is an inspiration to a lot of people and her story gives a clear and straight message – ‘Be good by heart and by soul’, that’s what actually matters. People will criticize and complain even when you are doing something good. All that really matters is what you feel and if your family okay with it. All’s well that ends well.
